Steven Ochs is an American artist, author, designer and technology entrepreneur based in Oregon. He explores the universe of intent through work that energizes people to direct their own futures in new ways.
Across these forms, Ochs keeps returning to the person looking, inhabiting, imagining and changing their own realities.
The practice
Artist statement
My work begins with a conviction: intent creates the future. I use art to ask how perception and participation shape our experience. Stereo Layering invites viewers to form an illusion of depth; an installation asks them to enter and inhabit the work. In fiction, I set a world in motion and leave room for the reader to build it in their own mind. Pudding Theory is an exercise in fictional science, explored through Pudding Heroes. Across these forms, I want people to see their own part in creating what comes next.
Artist history
I grew up on the border of Montana and North Dakota, served in the Air Force as a cryptologic Arabic linguist, and later worked with the United Nations in Baghdad. My early political artwork used Iraqi dinar as its surface.
My work expanded into installations, public experiences and technology. I built an early following on Twitter and became a Ford Fiesta Agent. Projects with Amazon, the Space Needle and Vulcan Group brought the work into new settings, while ArtFaceOff and Goose Cube made participation part of the experience.
Stereo Layering asks people to look again. My Goose Cube project consisted of three cubes that toured multiple locations around the Northwest. My overnight immersive project, The Portal / Signal House, was documented in 2023. Earlier project materials described its association with QBist Lab. Pudding Heroes takes that exploration into a psychological thriller about consciousness and reality. While writing it, I imagined Lelah as a human inside a computer. Later, an AI interpreted her as AI, a reading that surprised me.
Today, that interest in intention also takes shape in Toll Bench, where AI agents attempt to turn what people want into verifiable outcomes. Across these different forms, I keep returning to the same conviction: intent creates the future.
