A guide inside the story
After the ending of Pudding Heroes: The Rising Child, the printed story presents The Book of Houses as “Volume 1 / A Guide to Surviving AI.” Its in-world author is Sterling Geisel. The cover shown here appears inside the novel on printed page 304, with Sterling Geisel named as its in-world author.
The guide’s reader activities connect the fictional system to symbols, the Mind Lottery and an immersive website. These are part of the work’s storytelling and participation.
The Mind Lottery
The printed guide also introduces a participatory exercise involving a Strong Thought and a drawn symbol.
Explore the Mind LotteryFrom reading to participation
The guide introduces a Strong Thought: a short statement of something a reader values. The reader turns that thought into a simple drawn symbol and uses the Mind Lottery to compare it with symbols already printed in the book. The fixed printed pages become part of the work’s fictional premise about messages across time.
Steven’s book design carries that activity beyond a conventional ending. Sterling Geisel is the guide’s in-world author; Steven Ochs is the real author and designer of the enclosing Pudding Heroes volume. The website gives the reader another way to explore the symbol collection and play.
